OBJECTIVE

The objective of a workshop on research acumen typically revolves around equipping participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in conducting research effectively. It helps to provide participants with a solid foundation in the basic principles of research, including defining research questions, formulating hypotheses, and understanding different research methodologies.

The One Day Workshop was organized by Research Cell on 08 July, 2024, on the topic “Research Acumen for B Schools” which was conducted by Dr. Vipin Gupta, Co-director, Center for Global Management, Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration, California State University, USA.

About the Resource Person: Vipin Gupta, Ph.D., is a professor of management, and co-director of the Center for Global Management at the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration, California State University, San Bernardino. Professor Gupta has authored more than 180 journal articles and book chapters, including in leading journals such as Journal of Business Venturing, Family Business Review, Research in Organizational Behavior, Asia-Pacific Journal of Management, Multinational Business Review, Journal of World Business, Advances in Global Leadership, and Management Review. He has authored 30+ books and is an IIMA & Wharton Alumnus and has 180+ journal articles on business management to his credit.

About the Workshop: Dr. Vipin spoke on Innovative truth discovery with metaphysical system approach.  The workshop brought together researchers, academics, and practitioners interested in exploring novel methods and frameworks for truth discovery using metaphysical principles. The workshop aimed to foster discussion on integrating metaphysical concepts into computational truth discovery systems and to explore their implications across various domains.

The workshop commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Ripudaman Gaur, Dean, Lloyd Business School where he welcomed and introduced the esteemed keynote speaker Dr. Vipin Gupta. He was presented with a planter by Head of research at Lloyd, Dr. Fehmina Khalique. Dr. Gupta, in his address provided an overview of the historical and philosophical foundations of truth and reality. The workshop highlighted the relevance of metaphysical concepts such as ontology and epistemology in the context of truth discovery systems.

This session featured presentation by the Resource person on different metaphysical approaches to truth, including realism, constructivism, and pragmatism. Discussions focused on how these philosophical perspectives could inform the design of truth discovery algorithms and systems. The workshop concluded with a brainstorming session aimed at identifying future research directions and potential collaborations. Participants discussed the need for further interdisciplinary research and the development of standardized methodologies for integrating metaphysical insights into computational truth discovery.

Learning Outcome

The workshop facilitated discussions on bridging the gap between philosophical theories and computational methodologies. Participants learned about practical applications of metaphysical principles in developing robust truth discovery algorithms. Participants engaged in fruitful discussions that highlighted the importance of combining diverse perspectives to enhance the sophistication and applicability of truth discovery systems. The workshop identified promising avenues for future research, including the need for further exploration of specific metaphysical theories and their implications for different domains. Participants discussed potential collaborations and initiatives aimed at advancing the field of metaphysical-based truth discovery.

Overall, the workshop provided a platform for participants to expand their knowledge, exchange ideas, and forge collaborations that are expected to contribute to the evolution of truth discovery methodologies informed by metaphysical insights.
